McGuinty Liberals Plan to Rush through HST Legislation without Consultation
(Queen’s Park) Dalton McGuinty’s government has introduced legislation that will make the HST an expensive reality for Ontarians, and Simcoe-Grey MPP Jim Wilson is promising to use every legislative means available to stop the $3 billion tax grab. The local MPP is also daring McGuinty to hold public consultations in Simcoe-Grey.
“Taxes for an average middle-class family of four could increase by $2,500, and by more than $2,800 for a typical senior couple due to this new tax,” said Wilson. “The Progressive Conservative Caucus is committed to using every tool at its disposal to defend Ontario families and stop this tax grab from coming into effect.”
With the introduction of the HST legislation Monday, the McGuinty
Government has signalled it intends to push the bill through the
Legislature with minimal debate and no opportunity for province-wide
public consultation and review.
“I can’t recall many other issues that have sparked so many petitions,
letters and emails to my office,” said Wilson. “Dalton McGuinty is
running scared from public pressure on the HST as Ontarians realize its
effects, most notably as the single largest sales tax increase in the
history of the province.”
Tim Hudak and the PC Caucus are calling on Ontario taxpayers to lend
their voice to the anti-HST campaign. Constituents are encouraged to
both print and sign the HST petition at www.jimwilsonmpp.com and

a full public consultation – not just in Queen’s Park – but travelling
province-wide.
“I dare McGuinty to hold a public consultation in Collingwood or The
Blue Mountains and listen to tourism operators who will be devastated
by this tax,” said Wilson. “If McGuinty actually believes that this
tax grab is in the best interest of Ontario families he would have the
courage to hold open public consultations throughout Ontario. To do
otherwise is nothing less than a slippery and gutless attempt to deny a
voice to the seniors, middle-class families and small businesses who
have the most to lose from this $3 billion tax grab.”
