$0 for The Blue Mountains, $200,000 for the Philippines
(November 24, 2009) Progressive Conservative MPP Jim Wilson (Simcoe-Grey) asked Dalton McGuinty in Question Period today why he approved $200,000 in disaster relief for the typhoon that hit the Philippines when he hasn’t given 1 cent to the apple growers in The Blue Mountains.
“Dalton McGuinty was quick to act when another country needed aid for a
natural disaster,” said Wilson. “But when a tornado roars through The
Blue Mountains destroying apple orchards, McGuinty dodges dithers and
delays. There’s something wrong here.”
McGuinty announced on November 15, 2009 that his government would be
sending $200,000 to support disaster relief efforts in the
Philippines. To date, the McGuinty Government hasn’t sent 1 cent in
tornado relief to apple growers who suffered considerable losses
because of the August 20, 2009 F2 tornado – losses that aren’t covered
because of the inadequacies of provincial crop insurance programs.
“This is insulting,” said Wilson. “How can McGuinty justify providing
aid to another country when he hasn’t even begun to help the people in
his own backyard?”
